  1. Garbage In, Garbage Out

2 of my ex-clients are their own worst enemies. In one case, it might be deliberate. One of those subconscious self-destructive tendencies that there is no cure for but therapy. If someone is out to sabotage themselves, they'll succeed and there's nothing anybody can do. All you're going to get if you support, forgive, and overlook the behavior is to wind up on the list of things they have to drive away or destroy to achieve the alone-and-miserable status they think they deserve.

The one ex-c, as I said, is a question mark on that score. The other definitely is not, and that's good news/bad news territory, because GOOD-it can be fixed. BAD-if it isn't, then he too winds up in the alone-miserable-failure heap when he doesn't need to be.

The failing both ex-cs have is GIGO: Garbage In, Garbage Out. They tend to hire crappy people who come cheap - and there is a very good reason for that. It's like...
  2. Ahh, Spring!

When a young man's fancy turns to thoughts of love... unless he has hayfever, in which case his fancy probably turns to thoughts of histamine blockers, because it's hard to be smooth with the ladies if you have to break off for a sneezing fit every few sentences.

I don't know how many of us actually engage in spring cleaning at this time of year, but I know Mother Nature must. Two days or so, right around the time when the tax software gets installed, and again for two or three days in August, something happens that I call "the turning of the pollen." Late yesterday afternoon, the itchy eyes, and by this morning, sneeze-sneeze-sneeze-sneeze-whathe-sneeze-sneeze-sneeze.

Writing is not going to happen on these days for the same reason as hayfever guy will have a hard time picking up a girl. I feel fine, but the interruptions make it impossible to get into the zone and stay there. Rather than trying to swim...
  3. Compliment and Contrast

I've been on an Aikira Kurisawa kick lately. I heard a lecture on the Japanese filmmaker, and it set me off wanting to see Throne of Blood, Rashomon, Ran, and Kagemusha again as well as seeking out a few others. One of the things he did amazingly well was using music to either punctuate or contrast the visuals of what was going on in a scene. It's nothing new NOW, two of my favorite instances are from the Lion in Winter and West Wing. In the former, Henry and Eleanor are going into dinner in a banquet hall and, as it is the dark ages, there are several live dogs present. At first they seem to be just atmosphere, look how rough and rustic this period is. Then, as Henry and Eleanor continue to spat with these painted smiles on their faces, Henry says something really low, and there's a cut to Eleanor, close up, frozen smile-and we hear one of those dogs snarling. It's f-ing beautiful. West Wing did it a lot, but one of the best has to be in the season 2...
