    I was on a trip the last few days. Nothing elaborate: a lecture, a museum exhibit, and a few hours in an exquisite Japanese garden. Atypically for me, I left the laptop at home and left the cell phone off. That undoubtedly did as much for me as the Japanese garden, but let's give the garden the bulk of the credit anyway.

    There was an audio tour option, which I listened to a little of before deciding to turn it off and enjoy it au naturale, so to speak. In that audio tour, there were comments from the designer. He talked about the west being a movement towards the material, especially since the industrial revolution, while so much of the early Japanese philosophy was grounded in nature, and he viewed a garden as being a bridge between those. It is a man-made thing, certainly, it is designed, but for the purpose of bringing man into harmony with nature. He then went on to explain what he expected of and hoped for the garden...
